This painting of the Balancing Rock was inspired by a trip with my friend Larry to look at another geographical wonder ... Chimney Rock.  Larry asked me to go with him to look at Chimney Rock and possibly do a painting of it.  The day saw us walking through the woods carrying a ladder and using it to get down into the gorge from where Chimney Rock rises up at least sixty feet ... very impressive.

Later in the day, in the same general area, we found Balancing Rock and I was equally impressed with it.  This large rock, the size of a small cottage, is perched on top of three smaller boulders.  It was probably lifted and set there by glacial action thousands of years ago.  Underneath, a rusted cookie tin contains notes, signatures and business cards of past visitors.

Both of these natural wonders are away from all main roads, hidden in the woods, and are located in northern central New Brunswick.  I also did a painting of the Chimney Rock (which is also shown on this site) and titled it "Among Ancient Shadows."
